Sab kuchch chalta hai....

I

India is definitely progressing, it is much better than what it was earlier. India can easily become the most developed country in the world provided we get rid of our "Chalta Hai Attitude"...which means which hasn't been done properly. I will give you few examples, violation of traffic rules, speaking Hindi or English with lots of mistakes and writing it with grammatical mistakes, casually throwing waste around, corruption and bribing at most of the places are rampant, punctuality is rarely followed, most of the hoardings would have spelling mistakes, fire safety precautions are rarely taken...list is endless. Rarely people strive for excellence...average and mediocrity is accepted. Despite all this India is progressing much better than all other countries because we have now leaders who have the vision and determination to make India progress. It has no Brexit like issues which had almost brought UK to a standstill for the last three years, it has no controversial President who does everything which creates a new controversy. Let us get rid of our Chalta Hai attitude and make our India a global Super Power. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

We are Doctors...

I have hung up my uniform after serving Indian Army Medical Corps for 33 years on 31 July 2015. But I kept my uniform and my boots very carefully so that I can report for duty if there's an emergency. During 1992-95, I had served at Poonch sector of Jammu & Kashmir as Anaesthesiologist. I can never forget, on many occasions, I had to give anaesthesia to an unknown person injured at the border, brought to me for treatment. Many a times, we were pleasantly surprised to know during interrogations that the injured person on whom we operated all through the night to save his life was actually a Pakistani. Well, we never felt guilty that we saved a Pakistani who was found injured at the LOC, we are trained to save lives...that's all. Frankly, all doctors, whether they are from Army or from civil, they are trained to save lives...no doctor would ever harm you knowingly...trust me. It pains me a lot when I see doctors are being harmed and being hit by a patient or a patient's relatives for none of their faults. Please don't do such things, Doctor would definitely forgive you, but God may not...trust me. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Que sera sera...

I never planned for anything in my life...I strongly believe that whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. I never planned about my settling in Secunderabad and occupy the best house in Secunderabad. In fact, I used to be always chided by my friends, relatives and colleagues during my army life about my que sera sera attitude. I didn't do much planning for getting a good daughter in law, nor have I done much for establishing my son's career...but today, I am the most fortunate man...it's just destiny. My mother used to tell me often that even meeting people in our life is already destined...our life partner is already destined...there's nothing much we can do to facilitate it nor prevent it. I would say, just believe in yourself, and rest would fall into place. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

You're in safe hands...

You are in the safe hands, said the doctor. Sincerely, I feel, the patient is in safe hands if his doctor knows many things about him and every aspect of his disease and treatment. Rarely, I see an Anaesthesiologist knows the various steps of surgery where he is giving the anaesthesia. Anaesthesiologist mostly knows only his role in the entire surgery. But, I would say, the results could be better if the anaesthesiologist also knows about the surgery involved and the Surgeon also knows the Anaesthesia details being administered. A doctor is complete only when he knows Physiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy and Surgery aspects well. If he's inclined to learn these aspects well, I feel, the outcome of the patient would be definitely better...and yes, now, he would be in the safer hands. Col Pradeep Pendyala , Anaesthesiologist.

Endorphins...

Wonder, how many of you have watched Sankarabharanam the 1980 Indian Telugu-language musical drama film written and directed by K. Viswanath. Whatever you touch at the residence of JV Somayajulu produced a musical note...I feel the same at our medical college where I work...wherever I go in the college I hear Physiology, Pharmacology and medicine being discussed in musical note. My close friends ask me, why do I need to work after retirement from Army when my only child is married and settled well and my wife is well employed and earning...why can't I go globetrotting and enjoy my remaining life. Frankly, to each his own...globetrotting might be the best option for enjoying life for someone but my thoughts and my life and my priorities of life is different...teaching Anaesthesiology is my endorphin...it gives me the feeling of euphoria. May be, I will go globetrotting when this phenomenon stops ...and I would need a break...but for now, I am so happy teaching Anaesthesiology. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiology.

Blogs...

I love to write blogs...I have been writing educational, motivational and inspirational articles since 2009 and hundreds of my articles are published in Hindustan Times, Deccan Chronicle, various army magazines and of course, medical college souvenirs. Whenever I want to write anything on any topic, I do read a lot on that topic and I consider reading and writing with my perspectives is the best part of my life. When I started serious writing in 2009 and started sending them to Hindustan Times, for nearly six months, my articles were rejected by the editor and the publisher. I was desperate to get at least one of them being accepted for publication. I promised my son that I would keep writing and sending them to Hindustan Times till they finally accept my piece of writing. After nearly six months of sending countless articles, finally Hindustan Times accepted my first letter to be published. There was no turning back after that and my countless letters were published back to back. Today, my blogs are being read by thousands of my fans regularly. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

MBBS...make it more interesting.

My own classmate is Director of Medical Education. Once I wrote a letter to him requesting him to abolish Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry being taught in the first two years of joining MBBS. I strongly feel, they are very intricate and complex subjects...students rarely understand the practical application of these subjects and rarely figure out why they are being taught to them. I found many students of first two years of MBBS going into severe depression because they are unable to cope up with the deluge of most complicated subjects they are made to understand in the shortest period and being clueless of the need to by heart verbatim which they barely understand. Now, let me suggest a simple solution which I was yelling myself hoarse since last four decades...please start MBBS with clinicals...with direct observation and treatment of living patients in a Operation Theatre, Medical or Surgical or Obstetrics ward. Students would love to attend those clinical classes and would love to become most motivated doctors by understanding everything. I assure you, I can teach Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology in an operation theatre much better than the same being taught in lecture rooms where you are made to understand something which rarely goes to your head. Thanks for inspiring me...

I would like to thank DrAvk Mohan sir, Dr GR Sridhar, Sri Ankur Gupta sir and of course Dr Ampat Koshy sir who inspired me and helped me achieve the success which I desired. They did motivate me mentally and emotionally...and made a big difference in me. They could easily influence the way I think and feel. Incidentally, today, I am myself being able to positively impact the lives of others. Frankly, I want people to go beyond what is easy and comfortable. I urge people to explore new options to present themselves better. And yes, people are inspired by someone who is real human being than someone who seems to be too good to be true. I don't approve of any Godmen, Babas, Swamijis, and Gurus, but yes, we do have too many people around us to follow and to be inspired of. I sincerely hope people rise above petty politics and become someone themselves by doing right things, right now. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Destiny by horns...

A strong desire to do something larger which we sincerely seek and know that we are meant and intended to do, keeps us going. Let us not feed our insecurities and helplessness which can kill everything and anything that we have ever dreamed of doing. Let us not kill our character and let us not kill our own dreams for pleasing others. When we start living as directed by others, we may get many friends around us but he will be lonely at heart despite being surrounded by hundreds of well wishers. Let us not crave for our well wishers but let us face ourselves and our conscience with confidence, let us be happy with our own company and the company of our dreams and our personal character. Let us grab our destiny by horns and let us find our place in our life. We may never be able to rationally explain the purpose behind our life, but there is no harm in trying sincerely to know the purpose of our existence and our life. Chai wala

Good English skills are essential for your global business success. English is said to be the world's most important language and most communicative language. Managers aspiring to become more effective leaders in a global business should develop good English language skills. But interestingly, most of the Doctors I know in India have studied in vernacular medium schools. I personally know several students who studied in vernacular medium schools and gave the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced in their vernacular medium could easily crack the JEE. Yes, once they join MBBS or IIT, the medium of instruction is only English. Despite being from vernacular medium and never been exposed to expensive private English medium schools, I saw most of the toppers of MBBS and IIT are incidentally from vernacular medium schools. To be successful, you don't need English but a strong desire to be the best in your field of career. And yes, A Chai Wala can be the most successful Prime Minister of India having studied in a vernacular medium school. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

My Bucket List...

Today, I lost a good friend who passed away peacefully...everyone has to die one day. In fact, if you want to have the happiest and most fulfilling life possible you need to realize you're going to die one day and embrace it. We all know we're going to die one day, but who wants to think about it? Are you ready for a scary fact? At best, you have only 30,000 days on earth. And that's assuming a long life. It’s never too early to start a list of things you want to do in your lifetime...the bucket list. Frankly, I want to live a life filled with achievement, success, fun and adventure, yes, I want to dream big. I want to improve my singing and mimicry skills and perform in US, UK, Europe and also at Pakistan. I want to teach Tennis and Anaesthesiology to my juniors. I have tried a lot but I could never achieve a six pack abdomen, I would love to have a six pack abs. And last but not the least, I want to create a record for most languages spoken by a person.

Conspiracy of Universe...

When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it was famous quote of Paul Coelho. The same thing can be said in Hindi, kahte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho to poori kaynath use tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai. With hard work and sincere efforts, we can achieve anything. Success is definitely not an accident, it's the end result of very hard work and perseverance. Never giving up on our dreams and remaining focussed is definitely required for success. There's a common adage that we need to work harder and suffer more than anyone else if we want to achieve success... but I sincerely feel working hard is never a suffering as long as we love doing what we're doing. Working hard without a clear purpose is of no use, hence I would suggest anyone to work hard with clear purpose. Wishing you all a successful career... Col Pradeep Pendyala anaesthesiologist ðŸ˜„😄

A teacher...

I have been teaching Anaesthesiology at Mediciti institute of medical sciences Hyderabad after retirement from my service in Army Medical Corps. Oliver Wendell Holmes gave the term Anaesthesia... Wonder, who gave the term teacher. When I joined the department of anaesthesia at Comd Hospital Air Force Bangalore in 1989, I never knew that someday I would be teaching anaesthesiology myself. But now, I love teaching and yes now I know what should be the good qualities of a teacher. Engaging students in learning is not all that easy. You need to have patience and kind personality. Before teaching anything, the teacher should have knowledge of the subject matter and clear objectives of the lesson. You should have passion for teaching and love for the subject. Good teachers are always warm, enthusiastic and always accessible. Communication and imagination are great assets in teaching and yes the teacher should himself constantly learn before teaching others. Yes, I want to be scholar, researcher and a life long learner... The power of two words of Praise...

I'm a MD Post graduate students teacher for anaesthesiology. I have done little study on students behavior and importance of compliments and praises and incentives to encourage students in positive way and steering students towards excellence. Let me tell you friends that nothing stimulate more and increase productivity and excellent results than sincere appreciation and recognition of someone's work. It's better to give compliments right away. And giving genuine compliment can elicit desired positive results. Never underestimate the power of your words and genuine compliment. But you must know the right way to say it... It comes only after many years of sincere efforts. Praise should be given to the concerned only when appropriate, otherwise it can become ineffective. Sincere compliment definitely create an intrinsic desire in the students to do better and achieve greater results in shortest possible time. Ask yourself, have you ever praised or given genuine compliments to your students openly in the class or privately. If not, think again, you can easily change someone's life, career and future with two words of your appreciation. Col Pradeep Pendyala anaesthesiologist.

Funny names...

Western names are quirky and funny, whereas Indians love to have very interesting names. South Indian names are usually very long... My best friend's father's name was Somayajulu Venkata Seetarama Shankar Annaji Rao. Indian names vary from region to region and also influenced by caste, religion and are sometimes are even influenced by legendary Hero or famous novel or drama character. Often there's a mismatch in the name of the person and what he or she's actually in real life. I saw few ladies with the name Asha being most pessimistic in real life... A person may be named as Satyanand but I rarely find him speaking the truth. That really pains me. When I see parents abusing their children who were named by them as Rama or a Lakshmi, I often felt, our western counterparts with their funny and quirky names are much better option. Shall we call ourself a Mr Dan ( Druff), Billy, Polly or Pat Fanny. ðŸ˜ŠðŸ˜ŠCol Pendyala Pradeep anaesthesiologist.

Seven characters...

We do play seven characters in our life, being infant, schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, Pantalone ( a cunning and rapacious yet often deceived) and old age, facing imminent death. Interestingly, in Hinduism, human life is believed to comprise four stages... Brahmacharya or the student stage, Grihastha or the householder stage and Vanaprastha or the hermit stage and lastly, Sanyasa or the wandering ascetic stage. We do explore, grow and try to get enlightened as per our priorities. Life is a continuous progress...grow, develop and mature. Somewhere in these stages of growth, we learn how to function within our society. Our financial priorities change during different phases of our life. Childhood and adolescence are the most interesting...we have energy, we have time but we don't have money. Adulthood, when we work for living and try to sustain a family at that time, we have energy and money. Old age...post retirement life, we try to spend time with our family and grandchildren. Animal Lovers...

By and large, an animal lover is usually very nice and compassionate person as far as I know. They are fun loving and they are easygoing person. Trust me, animal lovers make better partners because they learn to read subtle cues and provide what is needed for the ones they love. I strongly believe that people who love dogs are the Best People around. And I also believe that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man. Interestingly, many meat eaters want animals to be treated as humanely as possible, and many of them take part in efforts to stop animal abuse just as vegetarians do. But it would be better to be a vegan if you are a true animal lover. If we actually see where the meat come from many of us would be disgusted....hence, all animal lovers who are non vegetarians are actually hypocrites. Unfortunately, many vegans are not animal lovers...let us be vegan as well as animal lovers. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Second Lieutenant Achyuta Rayalu...

Second Lieutenant Achyuta Rayalu of second Sikh Light Infantry may not be known to you but he was my uncle who sacrificed his life in 1962 Sino-Indian war. In every war, many soldiers become Heroes but many more remain as unsung Heroes...an unsung hero who acts bravely in a battle but without being noticed, without much recognition. In every war, thousands or hundreds of soldiers get killed but only a few get recognition for their sacrifices. All war represents failure of diplomacy... with all its death and destruction, war is nothing but a catastrophic failure of diplomacy. To stop terror and avoid war, we must first understand what causes it. Can we prevent a war? Can we make our world a safer place to live in? More attention needs to be given by our leaders in implementing prevention strategies that remove the conditions for conflict and war. Let us prevent future wars and make this world beautiful and peaceful. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Be Vigilant...

I feel bad when I see a person lost in his Whatsapp and remains aloof from the surroundings. I am not asking you to abandon whatsapping but I want you to be a bit open eyed and a bit attentive to your surroundings. I want my juniors to be aware of their surroundings... they must Identify every strange sounds or smell around them and savor the food they eat. Yes, I want them to pay attention to detail although it may not concern them directly. It needs a bit of training but you can easily become more attentive. No, I don't want you to become a Sherlock Holmes but paying attention to small detail would definitely improve your concentration and memory. Moreover, I am an Anaesthesiologist and I am trained to pay attention to every happening in the operation theatre and remain vigilant all the time. Pay a little more attention to the world around you and mark my words, your world would never be the same again. Col Pradeep Pendyala.

How to make MBBS more interesting...

Flashback...I was sitting in the Physiology class of Dr Venkat Reddy and he was taking a class on Deglutition ( Swallowing ) in 1975 at Andhra Medical College. His words...deglutition, is divided into three phases: The buccal phase occurs voluntarily in the mouth when the tongue forces the bolus of food toward the pharynx. This was the second lecture of the day after a class of Biochemistry on Metabolism which I could not understand despite my sincere effort...same happened in the dissection class of Anatomy where we learn anatomical structure of a deceased body through dissection with the help of Cunningham manual of practical anatomy. I was a bit confused with the whole education system which was not very interesting despite my sincere attempts...I was visualizing Physiology lecturer's muscles of deglutition more than paying attention to his class. Fortunately, rigmarole of such classes abruptly ended when I reached third year of MBBS and started attending Surgery, Medicine, Gynaecology and obstetrics classes...they were lively, very interesting and most practical. I could easily understand my anatomy, physiology and Biochemistry classes in an operation theatre or a medical ward where I saw the actual patients and their problems. Education today...

The greatest challenge facing education today is the need to discover with our students a new way of thinking. Teachers should know what is to learn and what is to share and how to share their learning with the students. We need to put ourselves in the shoes of the learners, being able to face a situation from their point of view. We do need to imagine what is possible to make education more creative. There’s still a lot of room for innovation in education. Teachers have a unique role now, they should help their students pursue their challenging plans. Personalized teaching could be less stressful for the students. Teachers should become collaborators rather than instructors as they help their students navigate their challenging projects. And yes, we need to encourage students to prepare for the lesson before the class on that topic. Lastly, a good education is a system that makes the student a better human being. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

You are the Best...

We need to become the best of ourselves and transform ourselves into the person we believe we should be. We need to have a picture of ourselves in our mind’s eye: a version of ourselves which is nothing but the best. We are capable of accomplishing great things...Success is very subjective... It could be just being a good husband or a wife, or just having a smile at the end of the day. The first step to being ourselves is to accept ourselves....not only accepting the good parts but also accepting the imperfection in us. Stop comparing yourself to others ...just think yourself to be the best...and try your best to actually become one. Always feel good about yourself, have a positive outlook in everything you do or see. Learn to love yourself. BTW, your life is not scripted by someone, you are the scriptwriter of your life....you are the solo scriptwriter. Unlock your full potential now, right now. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Happiness...

You must have noticed that I look very happy all the time...many people actually ask me how can they be happier than what they are right now. Frankly, being happy or happier is the easiest thing in the world...I am sure, something is making you unhappy, irritated or depressed...first of all, stop pleasing people, spend some time with friends which fill your day with memories that last lifelong, if you have a passion for doing something, just do it, don't postpone it for tomorrow. Take good care of your health and appearance. Get a new goal very often after you have achieved your last goal and work towards it. Nothing would make you more happy than achieving something that you aimed for. The most important thing to be happy is to have realistic expectations from the self and the world. Keep doing the things that you love despite of getting enough attention or appreciation. Lastly, don't miss out on the little things... it’s always those little things that make us happy. Gurkha Soldier...

I am a trained Gurkha Soldier, who was hand picked for Black Rock expedition along with nine other soldiers including two Sherpa who had earlier successfully climbed Kangchenjunga. I was incidentally the only medical officer in that expedition with no other medical personnel. It lasted for seven days of patrol through virgin land...I was a Captain of Army Medical Corps those days in 1984 and with no previous experience of mountaineering as I belonged to Andhra Pradesh where you don't find mountains. We walked through ice capped mountains ranging between 18000 to 21000 feet height with our rucksack filled with Shakkar Para and tinned minced meat. Those days, we never had google navigation app, our only navigation tool was our compass which told us which way is north. There was minimal chance of safe return but we did it successfully and I was recommended for VSM but definitely received Army Commander's appreciation Card for my gallantry. Enjoy the lyrics...

Lyrics...

I feel bad, when I notice the present generation don't pay attention to the lyrics of the songs....frankly, good songs are combination of magnificent lyrics and great music ...It's only in the lyrics, we find intense feelings and emotions of the singer. I always give importance to the meaning of the song, its meaning, emotions and feelings...of course, music too matters and romantic and passionate songs are always my first choice. Songs are nothing but words, ideas and emotions expressed with melodious voice. Lyrics do matter a lot...but, unfortunately, the present songs don't give much importance to the lyrics. Trust me, you'll enjoy the magic of a good song only if you pay attention to the lyrics besides the music. Frankly, I am a lyrics guy although I enjoy present as well as old great compositions. Trust me, great lyrics can make any song great...let me request the GenNext to write good lyrics for the songs although it need not be sheer poetry. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Positive Vibes...

I'm sure, you all know the meaning of a positive vibe or a good vibe...Vibes are the emotional signals a person gives out to those around them with their body language and social interactions. An example of good vibes is a happy person smiling and having a positive effect on those around them. Obviously, everyone would love to have positive vibes...very simple to acquire...start your day dishing out compliments, find what is positive among your friends and others and tell them about it...and yes, start your day, with few affirmations and positive comments...besides that, keep your energy focused to accomplish your goals. Still not convinced...?? Try to listen to good music, first thing in the morning...it would improve your mood for sure and yes start your day with a laughter. Still busy with your negativism...? just stop intentionally and focus on the positive things happening around you. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Army life and languages...

Being in army for 33 long years, I could learn around nine languages...well, actually, I was posted at almost all the states of India during my service, I just had to learn the language of that state in 2-3 years of my posting at that place. Learning a new language is very exciting hobby...try it. During my first posting in Sikkim, Lachung, my sahayak was a Gurkha soldier, he was my buddy as well as my teacher of Gurkhali. My biggest inspiration was our ex Prime Minister Sri PV Narasimha Rao whom I met accidentally in a rally at Vishakhapatnam in 1971, where he was translating a live Hindi speech of Mrs Indira Gandhi into Telugu. I could never forget his amazing talent of translating a live speech within seconds. I believe, he could speak 16 languages fluently. Frankly, I myself could learn many languages by listening to All India Radio news bulletins in various languages and watching TV serials and popular movies in many languages and of course, by being posted at almost every corner of India, thanks to army life... Let us be different...

I am sure, many must have encouraged you to be different and not to care what anyone thinks of you..but, do they tell you what exactly you should do. The best part of being different comes when you prove everyone wrong...!! Everyone knows that no one is the same, everyone is different and we should embrace our different(ness)... No, I am not saying all that...I am trying to convey that we must stand out from the others because we are not just others...!! We can get our passion from somebody, but let's not imitate them..because uniqueness is the one which comes without imitating....just be yourself for a while, I am sure, you will definitely find your goal...your uniqueness can be found only by you...nobody else...don't try to make an effort to fit in somewhere, where you don't belong, you can be yourself. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.
