Nincompoop...??

I always knew that a thin line separates a nincompoop (fool) and a brilliant person. Trust me, a fool can become a hero and vice versa. A fool is one who thinks he is wise because of his intelligence and thinks he is powerful because of his position. Similarly, there's a thin line between bravery and stupidity. And there's a thin line between confidence and arrogance. Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen as per Winston Churchill. Similarly, arrogance is thinking you are above someone else and confidence is knowing no one is above you. Trust me there are always simple solutions for our complex problems and never forget that keeping things simple is actually being a genius, but certainly not a fool. Karma...

I believe in Karma...Karma is the result of a person's actions as well as the actions themselves. Thus good karma produces good effect on the person and bad karma would produce bad effect. It is like vicious cycle and virtuous cycle. This effect may be material, moral or emotional... one's karma affects one's happiness and unhappiness...that's for sure. Let us have right view, right resolve, right speech, right conduct and right livelihood. Karma as action and reaction... if we show goodness, we will reap goodness. It is very hard to accept the theory of karma and rebirth which obviously raises numerous questions...such as how, when, and why did the cycle start in the first place ? One of the significant controversies with the karma doctrine is whether it always implies destiny...and yes, karma-rebirth doctrine cannot be proven. Whatever may be the controversy and confusion about Karma, one thing is sure, If you sow evil, you will reap evil in the form of suffering.... and if you sow goodness, you will reap goodness in the form of inner joy. Living life with real passion...

Doing something which we love, that we don't consider a job is our passion. If we know our real passion, we have discovered our purpose of living. If you are still confused about your real passion try to remember what you loved doing as a child...that's your real passion. Let us not presume that our passion should be our job. But if it is so, we should call ourselves very lucky. Passion generally means something we love to do. Passion is an emotion that comes from within us. It is our enthusiasm, our zeal, our drive and our motivation. Our passion can be anything that simultaneously challenges us, intrigues us and motivates us. Passion is the energy that keeps us going, that keeps us filled with meaning, and of course happiness, excitement, and anticipation. Let us separate our hobbies from our passions ...
Let us identify our values... live our beliefs and follow the joy of living life with our real passion. Col Pendyala Pradeep Anaesthesiologist.

Look young...

Trust me, when we are happy, fun-loving and open to new ideas, our mind and body stays youthful. Complaining and focusing on the negative thoughts might age us faster. Laughter is definitely good for our health, but if we smile a lot and laugh a lot, we are perceived to be younger than we actually are. Taking good care of our health and grooming always help our confidence level. Staying active keeps our joints mobile and our hearts working with the added oxygen of exercise. Those who don't drink, don't smoke, eat healthy nutritious foods stay younger much longer than those who do the opposite. Society is obsessed with youth but they don't want to do anything to be youthful for long. I often see people trying too hard to look young by wearing funny clothes which don't suit them. Age is definitely an evolving process but we can easily postpone ageing by being regular at our gym, more conscious of what we eat and by avoiding smoking and drinking altogether. Now please go to the gym regularly and do some exercise regularly and put on your best fitting jeans and a matching tee shirt. Check your posture and walk elegantly and wear your best smile all the time. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Hungry Kya...??

Reading is one of the most powerful habits that can change our life for better. As far as I know, all the happy and successful people were ardent readers. I do love people who keep themselves hungry for success and happiness. Frankly, success is a journey not a destination. Success and happiness are bound to come when we put sincere efforts. I did mention that we need to be hungry for success and happiness...wouldn't you like to know what's being hungry for success and happiness. Being hungry means that we need to be aggressively ambitious or competitive. Perhaps, it originates from a need to overcome past defeats or it is because our desire to succeed and happiness is so great. We need to remind ourselves of our purpose everyday. We must write down our ideal lifestyle and what the perfect life looks like for us and put a lot of time into our purpose, goals, and the things that motivate us. Being successful means the achievement of desired visions and planned goals...and yes, attaining wealth, prosperity and fame. Hope you are hungry ...I love Upma...dear Miss Anupma...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

A must watch....

You can save a Life...

The 108 Emergency Ambulance Service is a 24x7 service, which anyone can avail by dialing the number 108 on their phone during any medical emergency.
23rd October 2018 was declared as Restart a Heart Day by Indian Resuscitation Council which was an initiative of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists. Thousands of people across India were imparted training in Compression Only Life Support (COLS) in one day across India to celebrate the World Start A Heart Day today. The main
activity of this was to teach effective chest compression which should be performed continuously till help arrives if you witness a cardiac arrest. If the rescuer is alone, then he should activate the emergency medical system or ambulance services himself for early transfer of the victim for definitive treatment. The rate of chest compression should be 120/min and compression depth should be at least 5 cm but not more than 6 cm. The rescuer should allow complete chest recoil between compression without lifting hands from the chest but should not lean on the victim's chest. There should be minimum interruptions during chest compression. However, compression-only CPR ( Cardio pulmonary resuscitation ) may not be effective in cardiac arrest following drowning, trauma and asphyxia. Traditional CPR may improve the survival in such a case. Similarly, in paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, where the primary cause is usually of respiratory origin, traditional CPR may be beneficial. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Jack of all trades...

Since my childhood I was told about the derogatory saying Jack of all trades, master of none.... It implies that by trying to learn too many things, you end up learning none. But I was wrong...rather, all the people who told me about that saying were wrong...definitely wrong. In the year 1994, I met Col Anju Manchanda as my Commanding Officer at 150 General Hospital in Jammu & Kashmir. She was the one who changed the entire meaning of that saying and also my subsequent life thereafter. She told me in clear terms that we can be Jack of all trades and master of some. That was the turning point in my life. Although, I was nearing 40 then and people believe strongly that you can't change your personality after 40, but I could in my case. Some people don't embrace new things, because they fear change. But I could change myself completely after that. I started playing Volleyball regularly with army personnel and later started playing regularly tennis at the army clubs and also learning simultaneously swimming and diving. I started participating in all cultural activities and started compering events which I never did earlier. Spent many hours listening to All India Radio and never missed listening to the news in all sixteen languages on All India Radio. That really helped me in compering my shows in different languages which proved to be instantaneous hit. Meanwhile, I could win Agra open singing competition in 1996 which was a stepping stone towards my future singing career. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

If God is really God...

Train runs over people celebrating Dussehra near Amritsar...and hundreds of innocents die...absolute slaughter of the Innocents...my simple question...If God is really God, then He could have stopped it..ain't it...??
I have myself witnessed thousands of innocents dying in Gujarat Earthquake in 2001 where the death toll eventually rose to 25,000. I was myself officer in charge of the Operation Theatre at Bhachau, the epicenter of the earthquake, located 60 Kms from Bhuj ...fo
r a record three months where I saw hundreds of children found dead under the debris of earthquake. I know of few incidents where the pilgrims died after visiting Tirumala Temple...Recently, a tragedy took place at Kapila Theertham where 7 teenagers who went for swimming were drowned near Tirumala. My simple question, why God didn't save them...??
And my last question, if the law of Karma really exists, then why do the innocents suffer...???
BTW, I am not an atheist...but I am a strong believer of God...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.
PS. The picture attached shows me briefing Shri George Fernandes, the then Defence Minister at Bhachau Operation Theatre during Gujarat Earthquake in 2001.

Let's fight Age...

We can't change our date of birth...we can't stop ageing...but yes, we can slow down aging but again we can't halt ageing entirely. We can easily stop premature aging by stopping smoking, drinking less alcohol, exercise regularly and by eating well balanced diet and yes by sleeping minimum eight hours daily. By avoiding stress or by lessening stress in our life, we can actually turn back the clock and reverse early onset aging. We can't change our age, but we can definitely change the shape of our body and look younger at any age. We can't run from our age, but we can try. Okay, we can't fight age but let's fight those negative attitudes, let's challenge ourselves, and let's keep an open mind to be ever young in our attitude. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist

Born Romantic...??

I am a born romantic... I always believed poetry to be superior to science. Yes I know, romance films are usually targeted to female audience. ..but men are also influenced by romantic movies and I am the best example. A Scottish study suggests that romantic movies create unrealistic expectations in real life. Yes, I know that movies are nothing but escapism but may I know, is there a better way to escape the horrors of this world than a nice romantic film? I must have watched almost all the famous romantic movies of Bollywood, Hollywood and Tollywood...not once, but many times. Let me explain why do we love romantic movies and novels so much...when we see a romantic movie, we are aware of its fictional nature but we definitely become hopeful that somewhere there is still a possibility of happiness. Romance is nothing but hope and possibilities, and hope is the elixir of life, ain't it...?? Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

A lecture...

Last Saturday, I took a class on Anaesthesia for Severe Pre-Eclampsia, and it was by best lecture...reason was simple, I saw few YouTube videos on the same subject prior to my lecture and found my lecture was much better. Interestingly, on the eve of World Anaesthesia Day which is annually celebrated on October 16, on the anniversary of the first use of ether anaesthesia by William T. G. Morton, I would love to write on how to deliver a lecture effectively. The classroom lecture is a special form of communication in which voice, diction, vocabulary, gesture, movement, facial expression, and eye contact do matter a lot. Share your outline with your students and emphasize your objectives and key points in the beginning. Start with a story from your personal experience. Use humour... a joke, but not too often. Have a test or a quiz in between your lecture without offending the knowledge of your students. Creating a welcoming learning environment and making students feel comfortable and important is essential, needless to say, you must know their names and their limitations. I hate teachers using abbreviations too often and expecting the students to know the meaning without explaining the abbreviation. I often attend many conferences where I find the speakers expect you to know the meaning of the abbreviations and he doesn't care to explain the abbreviation. It is like attending a wedding, where an elderly gentleman wants to know whether you have recognized and placed him without introducing himself. Incidentally, you end up spending rest of the wedding trying to figure out who could be that gentleman. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

GenNext...

Today, I had a brief speech in the seminar on Young people and Mental Health in a changing world at the medical college where I work, although, it was organised by Psychiatry Department. World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. My points were widely appreciated by the students. These were my points...
One in four young teenagers in India suffers from depression and India has the highest suicide rate among 10 Asian countries. Depression is a major cause of disability but it is also a highly treatable condition. But social stigma often prevents many patients from speaking out and seeking care.
Let me share with you why we are unable to solve this problem . Year after year, we have seminars, discussions and WHO guidelines but nothing much is happening. As far as I know, people suffering from depression and anxiety are increasing by the day. Let me tell you, why ...?? The reason is very simple we rarely step into the shoes of the teenagers and we rarely try to understand their problems through their eyes.
Frankly, we are dealing with GenNext and we try to solve their problems with our archaic ideas and views on how to deal with depression and anxiety. Our old views may not hold water. There is no single reason why teenagers use drugs or alcohol, as a parent, we must understand these reasons and talk to our kids. BTW, teens can't tolerate being alone, and we rarely spend quality time with our children. And I wanted to say one very important thing to the parents, for God's sake, don't live vicariously through your children, let them have their their own dreams and goals. I know few students, who are pursuing MBBS because their parents want them to become Doctors...although, they themselves wanted to become an Engineer. ..Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Depression...??

"Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self esteem, first make sure you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes."
This was neither said by Sigmund Freud nor the award-winning science fiction author William Gibson.
But the statement is hundred percent true...whoever might have said.
World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year..hence I thought, being a doctor, I must dispel few global misconception about depression and low self esteem.
Adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of life when many changes occur, for example changing schools, leaving home, and starting university or a new job.Young people are particularly vulnerable to mental distress and illness.
Taking a day off from work to care for your mental health could be instrumental in helping you feel at your best. Even for people who are not suffering from clinical levels of depression and anxiety, the occasional mental health day might still be valuable.
Psychological factors that may contribute to mental illness include... severe psychological trauma suffered as a child, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Several factors in life can have an impact on our mental health including ... business, sexuality, sleep disorders and alcohol and other drug use. Interestingly, I strongly believe, poor physical health can affect self-esteem and people's ability to meet their goals, which leads to unhappiness or even depression. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Do I fear God...??

There's a constant debate in my head whether I'm an atheist or a theist...??
Atheism is the rejection of belief that any deities exist...No, no, I do believe that God do exist...and yes, I do agree that there's a super power which exists ...there's a supreme power who's always around us although never seen. Agnosticism is the view that human reason is incapable of providing sufficient rational grounds to justify either the belief that God exists or the belief that God does n
ot exist...I don't fit in that category nor do I fit in the group who could be called Agnostic atheists who are atheistic because they do not hold a belief in the existence of any deity and agnostic because they claim that the existence of a deity is either unknowable in principle or currently unknown in fact.
Now the big question...do I pray to God often...my answer is a big No...because, I strongly believe that if you are doing everything correctly without malice towards anyone, you need not be scared of anyone including God...and I know too very well that I don't do anything wrong knowingly. Hence, why should I be scared of God and keep requesting for his blessings...??
But, I must admit, that I do remember God and pray Him for few seconds before every Anaesthesia I administer to a patient ..because, I want my patient to survive at any cost. And yes, the last time, I went to a temple to pray, was for His blessings for my son who was getting married. I went to a Gurudwara, a Darga and of course, I have visited Shirdi Sai Baba for the same reasons...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.
