New Year Resolutions

Started the new year with Garam Garam Puri as breakfast. I do hope sincerely that I would achieve the following resolutions for this year 2021. Read more of Anaesthesiology. Get better results for my final year post graduate students. Eat more veggies rather than chicken. Create better songs and mimicry videos. Learn more new things. Create a bigger friendship circle and above all today being the first day of the year...wish as many people as possible...A Happy New Year 2021. How to prepare for the exams

I always tell my students to read atleast one page a day... because, I know too very well that it's impossible to read only one page. The moment you complete one page, you feel the desire to read one more page and the process goes on. Well, frankly, it's always better to plan your studies spread over one month. Understanding the concept and deeper understanding of the topic is essential rather than cramming it and trying to memorize it verbatim. If you try to memorize everything without understanding, it's a huge stress generating exercise. Try to entertain yourself while reading...eg listen to your favourite song after completing a difficult chapter or present yourself a Cadbury after writing down all the important points. Easier way to learn is reading a PPT or understanding a diagram or a table connected to the concerned topic. And yes, if you want to memorize it for a lifetime, simplest thing is to teach someone... your junior or your classmate, the things you've learned already...

An Anthem

 Invisible to you

Unknown to all

We put you to sleep

We keep you alive

We keep you safe

We wake you up

We send you home

We take the risks

We call the shots

We hold your life, praying

In the palm of our hands

We do not gamble

With its price

We take the blame

In case we fail

We let others take the credit

When we succeed

Which is most of the time

We are the anaesthetists

We have only one motto

We value your life

More than ours

We monitor your breath

We measure your heartbeat

We master machines

Save countless lives

We are the anesthetists.

We watch your pulse

The rise and fall of your chests

We hold you precious

Remember your loved ones

We bring you back from slumber

Stupor and drugged states

We stand for care and value

And e-quality

We cannot have a gap

Between our words and actions

Name and reality

Unlike  other professions

Such a slip would be costly

We stand at our post

For hours, and ages

We remain there steadfast

To the end, as needed

Forsaking food and drink

And sleep and loved ones, if need be

Like the world's best soldiers

Concentrated, focussed

We are the anaesthetists.

Getting a kick...

I love to write real-life inspirational blogs. I'm sure, you might be loving to read the travel blogs or a foodie blogs... but I may not write much on those topics. Some of my followers actually say that my blogs are life changing. Well, you may ask me, does people still read blogs. The answer is definitely yes. A blog where I wrote about my saving a life of a Pakistani while serving at Poonch was read by more than one and half lakhs people all over the world. I know nobody would give me bharat ratna for that...but writing blogs gives me kick which I don't get anywhere else. Have a wonderful Tuesday. Do you Know...???

Do you know what we do

When the patient is asleep during surgery

Do you know what we do

When you are not breathing enough to sustain yourself

Do you know what we do

When there are no heart sounds

Do you know what we do

When everyone says there's

No hope of your survival

Do you know what we do

When you're declared a Corona  positive and struggling to breath

Do you know what we do

When you need a Cesarean

Do you know what we do

By looking and analyzing the monitors when everything goes wrong

Yes we're the Anaesthesiologists

Yes we're the one

Who saves you

When everything goes wrong

Anaesthesia is not just

Putting you to sleep

But making sure

You wake-up

After you sleep...Col Pradeep Pendyala, Professor of Anaesthesiology, ASRAM

Nobody knows...

Nobody knows that my own uncle was once deputy speaker of 6th Lok Sabha...Sri Godey Murahari. I stayed with him in Delhi when he's a MP during 1975. He's also Rajya Sabha deputy chairman during 1972-77. He started his political career along with Sri George Fernandes of Samata Party an

d later joined Indian National Congress. Well, you can see me in this picture along with the then Defence Minister, Sri George Fernandes when he had visited the Bhachau sector of Bhuj during the well known Earthquake of 2001. I was in charge of the Operation Theatre of Bhachau for a record period of three months during those earthquake and aftershocks. I must have given anaesthesia to thousands of people those days at Bhachau and interestingly, not a single death. Believe it or not, I was a huge fan of Sri George Fernandes and his style of working and thinking.  ...Col Pradeep Pendyala, Professor, ASRAM.

Nobody knows

Nobody knows that I was part of the most dangerous and treacherous Black Rock expedition team which was conducted in 1984 at Tibet border. I was the only Army Medical Corps Medical officer with no other medical assistance in the team of seven Gorkha Soldiers ( including two Sherpas who successfully climbed Kanchenjunga earlier ) along with the team leader Maj RK Sharma. Our task was to ascertain the possibility of enemy infiltration using a virgin land. We did a patrol for seven days and nights nonstop walking with short halts and using our shakkar para and packed minced meat as the only diet while trekking at an altitude of 21000 ft above sea level. There used to be no Google maps those days ...the only reference used to be our compass for directions and our army map for reference... that's all. We celebrated diwali in our own way when we suddenly realised one night that it was actually Deepawali night. Maj RK Sharma is no more alive today. I was decorated with Army commander's commendation card for this act of bravery. Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Fauji remains a fauji

Fauji remains a fauji even after his retirement. I've completed five years after my retirement in 2015 after serving Army Medical Corps for 33 years, but even now, when I report to my hospital duties, it's always fifteen minutes earlier than the stipulated time. In army, if you attend a casual function at the time specified, you're fifteen minutes late, you're expected to reach the venue fifteen minutes earlier. After working at Hyderabad for four years after retirement, when I relocated myself at a much smaller place, Eluru, for my further professional career, there were no issues in adapting myself to the new environment and new people, it comes naturally to a fauji... that's his true attitude 😉  Col ( Dr ) Pradeep Pendyala, Professor, ASRAM

Philomath

A philomath is a person who loves to learn new things. Let's be adventurous...limitless and unconstrained. Lockdown period is the best time to learn something new. Set a golden benchmark... learning is a lifelong process...after you reach one goal...set your sights on the next goal. Keep reinventing yourself... unless you reinvent yourself, you'll become a big bore. Be someone, who loves unfamiliar but exciting new experiences... Prof Col Pradeep Pendyala ASRAM.

Will power...

Will power is like a muscle, the more you train it, stronger it gets. When I moved to Eluru from Hyderabad my wife challenged me that I won't last in Eluru for more than a month... because she knew about me so very well being my life partner for the last 35 years. Well, I lasted very well in Eluru and going strong. She must have thought, I'm used to urban lifestyle, five star food on a daily basis and of course my regular stage shows at RSI Secunderabad and my regular tennis 🎾. But she's definitely wrong ... although I'm passionate about those things...but my career and my professional life took precedence... Col Pradeep Pendyala, Professor, ASRAM

Discipline

Many people often ask me, how do I manage to do so many things each day. Answer is very simple...self discipline. Self discipline helps you to focus on your goals. It helps you stick to the work you want to get it done in order to achieve success. When you are focused on your goal, you will complete every single thing that needs to be done. Discipline in student's life is very important as it helps you to achieve  career's goals.  Being in discipline means following a set of certain rules, regulations and showcasing a proper code of behavior. A disciplined lifestyle always leads to success, be it academic, health, business or profession.... Trust me ... PP.

Don't let anyone Stop you

Never let other people's opinions stop you 😉...dear friends, I sing songs for my own pleasure and when I record or sing at various functions, it gives me immense happiness...those are the best moments of my life ...I really enjoy singing those songs. Well, when I started uploading my videos on YouTube ...some of my friends made some vitriolic comments on my singing ability. A lady friend advised me to first obtain classical singing training for five years thereafter I should record my songs. But I never let anyone's opinion stop me ...I kept singing and recording my songs. As of now, I have thousands of songs on my YouTube channel. And yes, I won countless prizes both at state level and national level. I could sing live with many celebrity singers... Col Pradeep Pendyala Professor ASRAM

Alluri Sitarama Raju Academy of medical sciences

Today,  I've completed five months at Alluri Sitarama Raju Academy of Medical Sciences as Professor of Anaesthesiology. It's named after the famous freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju. There's something common between both of us...he's a warrior against the British and I'm well trained warrior of Army for 33 years and now a warrior against covid 19. The similarities don't stop here ... he's born on 4 July ...I was born on 6 July. Well, the college and the hospital  are located in a vast area of 100 acres very close to Gannavaram ( vijaywada ) airport. Chairman of the institute is Sri Gokaraju Gangaraju sir. The faculty is amazingly good. It's my proud privilege to be associated with ASRAM. Col Pradeep Pendyala Professor ASRAM.

Consistency

Consistency is most important in whatever we do. My first serious stage show was in 1995 at Agra club. Thereafter, I compered cent percent shows of Agra club till the time I was posted out to military hospital Dhrangadhra. My first Army Medical Corps Day compering was in 1994, thanks to my commanding officer col ...later Maj Gen Anju Manchanda. Thereafter, I compered nearly cent percent Army Medical Corps Day celebrations till the time I retired in 2015. My first Army sports day compering was in 1993 thereafter, I must have compered 25 Army sports day functions which must be a record which can never be broken. My first Mceeing and compering the function of RSI Secunderabad was in 2011. Thereafter, I was the host for almost all functions at RSI Secunderabad. ...Col Pendyala Pradeep

Role of English in science

Your good English accent and good command over English makes a huge difference especially when you're seen and heard in conferences. I keep telling this mantra to my post graduate students almost everyday. Recently, I attended one scientific conference online... incidentally, the second speaker was well informed but the first speaker made quite an impact only due to his better English language. Who says there's no role of language in science? I insist on correct spelling, correct pronunciation when a person speaks or writes English.  Wrong spelling reflects your casual attitude towards vigilance and constant vigilance is of paramount importance in Anaesthesiology.

How to become a genius...

You feel extremely nice whenever someone addresses you as a genius 😉. Well, today I'm going to tell you actually how to become a genius. For becoming a genius you need to have an IQ of 140 or above, which may not be possible for everyone. But, you can definitely work hard and improve your knowledge and skills. If you are very keen to increase your IQ and want to be called real genius, let me tell you, geniuses are mostly made, not born. Start engaging yourself in stimulating conversation, read, read and read, take online courses and yes, never miss doing ten to fifteen minutes of aerobic exercise everyday. Good luck 👍 Col Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.

Are you a loser or a winner ?  It depends on your emotional quotient. Emotionally intelligent people don't just understand emotions; they know what they're good at and what they're terrible at. ... Having a high EQ means you know your strengths and you know how to lean into them and use them to your full advantage while keeping your weaknesses from holding you back. If you're not happy with a relationship, if you are not doing professionally what you are good at or you're crazy about, there's no point, Move on in life... zindagee na milegee dubara ...

Don't panic...

Friends, you need not panic about Corona, you can be serious about it but for God's sake, don't panic, it won't serve any purpose. Most people infected with Corona would have mild symptoms and are likely to recover within two weeks. Only 14 percent might develop severe symptoms viz laboured breathing or increased rate of breathing with decreased oxygen saturation but they may not die. Only five percent might develop respiratory failure, septic shock and multiple organ failure and out of which only two percent might die. Hence please stop being obsessed by this Corona round the clock ...try to smile and enjoy your life at home...stay home, stay safe... Col Pradeep Pendyala Anaesthesiologist.

Few reminders

Break your face touching habit, use sanitizer often, clean your mobile phone everyday with isopropyl alcohol, preferably use headphones or speakers on the mobile phone so that you don't touch your face often with your phone, make sure, you've a thermometer to know any increase in your temperature, don't neglect good nutrition, whenever you sneeze, try to sneeze into your elbows and lastly, don't miss daily five minutes workout at home. Latest about Covid19

Scientists have suggested dozens of existing compounds for testing but WHO is focusing on what it says are the four most promising therapies: an experimental antiviral compound called remdesivir; the malaria medications chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine; a combination of two HIV drugs, lopinavir and ritonavir; and that same combination plus interferon-beta, an immune system messenger that can help cripple viruses. Some data on their use in COVID-19 patients has already emerged—the HIV combo failed in a small study in China-but WHO believes a large trial with a greater variety of patients is warranted

Strange dreams...

Strange but true, if you keep thinking about something to happen, it actually happens. If you keep telling yourself repeatedly that you're great, you actually become one. Similarly, if you keep telling yourself repeatedly that you are useless, you do become one for sure. Now for God's sake don't ask me whether you'd grow six foot tall if you constantly think that you would...nor you'd become rich like Mukesh ambani if you keep on thinking about becoming rich. But trust me, there's something called fulfilment of a desire by the power of constant thinking. When you think constantly of something strongly desirable,  your dream would definitely come true.

Become a writer

There's a writer in all of us, we just need to start writing in black and white about our feelings and thoughts, that's all. I was very keen to get my write ups published in newspapers. In 2009,  I must have sent thousands of my write ups to various newspapers including Hindustan times, Times of India and Deccan chronicle. But there's no response from the editor for more than eight months. My son told me that my write ups may not be published ever. But I didn't stop my attempts of sending my write ups to various newspapers especially for the column of  letters to the editor. Believe it not,  after few more months my letters started appearing very frequently in most of the newspapers. More than seventy five write-ups of mine were published in Hindustan times...which must be a record.

What's your name ??

What's your name ? Chamundeswari sir !! Do you know the meaning of chamundeswari ? No sir !
It's nothing but goddess Durga.
This interesting conversation took place at our hospital just now and I was talking to my hospital sweeper services staff !!
Well, it's ok if this illiterate lady doesn't know the meaning of her name, but, I find it funny when an educated person sometimes refuses to tell me the meaning of his own name because he doesn't know.
Why do names have meanings? Simply because it was traditionally common to name people after certain concepts, to bless them, to indicate something about them, to let them appear different and so on and so forth. That were probably the original meaning. BTW, even a meaningless name has some meaning because it means that specific person whose name it is 😉😁

Teacher of Anaesthesiology

I always wanted to be a good teacher in Anaesthesiology. Unfortunately, I was not able to accomplish my dream due to my postings to various peripheral hospitals during my thirty three years of army life. But I never left my optimistic attitude...I knew someday I will be able to achieve my goal. Immediately after my retirement I joined Malla Reddy institute of medical sciences Hyderabad but they didn't have MD post graduate students in Anaesthesiology those days...I had only few DNB students with me and I started my sincere efforts. I could accomplish my first dream of becoming a good teacher while I was working at Mediciti institute of medical sciences Hyderabad when I was permitted to speak at ISACON Telangana. There's been no looking back thereafter ..I was chosen as faculty speaker at ISACON National at Agra. Later, I was a panel speaker at Hycom and speaker at South zone ISACON and of course at ISACON National at Bangalore. Finally, I'm the happiest person in the world as a Professor at Alluri Sitarama Raju Academy of Medical Sciences.

Facebook and me

Strange but true, when I joined Facebook in 2009,  I was computer illiterate and a very slow reader ...rather, I used to hate reading much. I never had shown much interest to be well informed by reading newspapers thoroughly nor watching news channels and ever doing in depth analysis of world happenings. Facebook changed my outlook and my entire personality...I started reading various happenings of the world and various topics and regularly reading excellent write-ups and poetry and reviews of movies and politics on Facebook...that broadened by horizon. Suddenly, I noticed that I became a speed reader and a voracious reader too. My computer skills increased to a great extent. Well, that's my story...

Life's journey

Strange but true, everyone is fighting his/her own battle in this world. We can't say that we're having more challenges in life than others. Others may be having more problems than us ..they may not be sharing or else, they may not be as lucky as us in getting over their problems. Interestingly, everyone has got some complex or personal demons which they keep fighting all through their life. Life's a very interesting journey...the twists and turns are truly amazing. Sometimes we feel as if it's our worst phase of our life but frankly that's the turning point and the same problem and obstacle makes us extremely strong and successful.

I think, I'm a very happy person
I don't know, if I'm the happiest person in the world, but yes, it could be  😊😊
Well, you can be a very happy person yourself all the time... trust me.
It's very simple...
Just focus on your positives
And strong points
Believe me, God has made each one of us very very beautiful, it's how you perceive yourself
And each one of us have been bestowed with some unique talents
You just need to identify your calling
That's all  😊😊

Dr D Raghunadharao Rao

It's a an honor and privilege to be a classmate of Dr Digumarti Raghunadharao, a BC Roy award recipient and director of Homi Bhabha cancer and reasearch centre visakhapatnam. He's my classmate at Andhra medical College between 1975-80. He's the person who developed comprehensive cancer centre including tumour registry at Nizam's institute of medical sciences, Hyderabad.  He pioneered cancer clinical trials in India. These days, he's busy in preventing cervical cancer in India by mass HPV vaccination. He's celebrating his birthday today and I would wish him all the best for his endeavours and pray God for a long life to this noble person.

ASRAM

Throughout our lives, we look for peace and happiness. We want to live a happy life and want to know the purpose of our living. I'm no exception... finally, I got answers to all my queries... I'm at ASRAM, Alluri Sitarama Raju Academy of Medical sciences and I'm very much staying at the campus in a
n apartment provided by the medical College. Right away, time seems to have stopped ... I'm surrounded by nature and beautiful trees and plants... dotting the vast stretch of campus are flowering trees and shrubs which is beyond description. Chirping of thousands of birds especially during sunset is something very pleasant and I find it very soothing and melodious. Few restaurants within the campus are additional delights. And not to forget the amazing learning center Dr APJ Abdul Kalam central library...which could be the best library in the entire country.

Mother's cuisine...

I'm very much used to five star food but how come I'm so happy and satisfied with the mess food at the college campus where I live these days. There's a very popular Chinese restaurant at a stone's throw away distance from my residence where I stay at the college campus. But there's a controversy that increasing number of people are falling prey to stomach cancer due to ajinomoto a salt of mono sodium glutamate which is often added to most of the Chinese food. Interestingly, Rasam is served at our mess on a daily basis and Rasam is known for improving our immune system to even fight  microorganisms and viruses which cause dengue, H1N1 and now even being recommended for Corona virus although not proven. At our mess I usually have meddu vada/ garelu, idli, sambar, coconut chutney and sambhar as breakfast or else puliharam, upma, dosas and puri. Lunch consists of mudda pappu made of toor dal, bendakaya vepudhu... lady's fingers, steamed rice, vankay repudhu, goru chikkudhukay vepudhu, perugu with mango pickle and dondakai pachchadi, and not to forget jilakara miriyalu Rasam and occasionally we have semiya payasam. We do get chicken curry three times a week. But most importantly this traditional food which I eat here always reminds me of my mother's cuisine...same taste...same spicy and delicious taste.

Who conspires ??

Paulo Coelho believed that when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho toh poori kainath use tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai...
I strongly believe this philosophy
I was very keen to become a professor of Anaesthesiology and to have plenty of post graduate students whom I could teach. After my retirement from Army Medical Corps where I served for 33 years, my first priority was to become a professor with lots of post graduate students. And all the professionals whom I met in my journey towards my goal kept helping me directly or indirectly without their knowledge in achieving my goal. Some strongly believed that they're causing obstacles for me in my progress but interestingly whatever they did for me actually helped me profusely in achieving my goal. I must thank all my supporters and detractors for helping me directly or indirectly in achieving my goal and yes, I thank that super power without whose permission nothing happens to us.

Life at 64...

Hi friends, Om Sai Ram. Just now got up for a fresh day. I'm 64 running... retired from Army Medical Corps five years ago. I haven't taken a single leave after retirement from Army life which I served for 33 long years. I wish, I had served it more but the retirement age is 58 and I'm supposed to be old at 58. I joined Malla Reddy institute of medical sciences the very next day of my retirement and later I worked at Mediciti institute of medical sciences, Hyderabad and now I'm a professor of Anaesthesiology at Alluri Sitarama Raju Academy of Medical Sciences Eluru but I haven't taken a single leave. Every day I jump out of my bed to greet a fresh day and welcome one more beautiful day. I love to play tennis and volleyball which I do almost everyday. I spend time in the library reading professional books and spend as much time in the library as a final year post graduate student does. I don't know why I never felt like taking a long leave and go on pilgrimage or sight seeing of foreign locales which my colleagues do so often...strangely, I'm so contented with my present life. Col (Professor) Pradeep Pendyala, Anaesthesiologist.
