Resolutions...2018

2018 is just around the corner, for the last few days, I'm receiving hundreds of inspiring new year's resolution quotes and memes on a regular basis. Anything new holds our interest, similarly, a New Year. More than the resolutions for 2018, I think, we must introspect 2017 and assess how did we fare in 2017. The problem with the resolution is that a resolution is generally easier to break. There's no point in making impractical New Year resolutions which are never fulfilled. It's always better for us to lose weight, or get fit, or spend more time with our children and yes, please leave the unpleasant with 2017 and stick to the things which gave us happiness in the last year in 2018 too. Never say die...

A never-say-die soldier keeps on fighting even when the situation is scary and dangerous. Someone with a never-say-die attitude about winning a game will keep on playing hard even when they're losing by a lot. Don't ever give up, do not despair, although, it may not look too promising, but never say die, it may still work out. In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea.Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. Virushka...

Both started their career together...Actress Anushka Sharma made her debut in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi two weeks prior to Asin Thottumkal who made her debut with the movie Ghajini in 2009. Both were extremely talented and ambitious but today, Anushka is several miles ahead of Asin. Team India skipper Virat Kohli and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma tied the knot in Italy on December 11. Today they are known as Virushka, the most popular and successful couple of India. Interestingly, Varushka means a stranger in Russian and Virushka is known to the whole world. Let me tell you the secret of Anushka's success story... She was extremely passionate about what she was doing...She was working hard while having fun...She had a specific focus...She persistently pushed herself out of her comfort zones... And yes, she consistently came up with new ideas...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Ma'am

Maj Gen Anju Manchanda was my commanding officer at Rajouri Hospital during 1994-95. I was a Major then and ma'am was a Colonel. She used to insist on a well-balanced development of our health and wellness and always wanted us to include arts, culture, sport in our growth and development besides our medical skills. My friends keep asking where I got the idea to start compering events...I'm sure, they got my answer now. Creative inspiration is all around us and we should never miss to notice creative people around us. I enjoy good conversations and great interactions. Our teachers and our colleagues have an essential role in shaping our personality. Opportunities for inspiration and greater creativity can be found all around us every day. And yes, everybody can be creative, Have a great Creative Day...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Shashi Kapoor

Mere paas maa hai...that famous dialogue of Shashi kapoor in the movie Deewar changed my life....I made sure, my mother stayed with me till her last day. This iconic, most stylish and handsome Hero was introduced to me by my classmate Ravi, ( later known as Group Capt Ananth Padmanabhan ) in 1963 during my childhood at Rourkela. I never missed a single movie in which he acted thereafter. He had something very special about him ...his charming personality which always inspired me. I loved his movies especially Deewar, Kabhie Kabhie, Silsila, Shaan, Trishul and Namak Halaal. A New You...

It actually hurts me to see people who refuses to think beyond the box. There's a solution for any and every problem. Approaching the problems in new, innovative ways is the best solution. We need to look at things differently from the way we typically look at things. We need to shift our thinking away from our brain’s logic centers and into a more creative part of our brain and start thinking something new, something different. We must move beyond our everyday pattern of thinking. Thinking outside the box ...this phrase was initially used as a metaphor for creativity and later, it took its hold in various disciplines such as marketing, management, and personal improvement. Flexibility increases our tolerance for stress. Being open to any changes allows us to move out of our box into something absolutely new....A NEW YOU... beyond our comfort zone. Save the Saviour...

Public relations and communication skills are the need of the hour for doctors today. The incidence and intensity of violence against medical professionals in India is on the rise. Angry, disrespectful, rude and violent patients, their relatives and friends need to be handled by a special training of all the medical professionals. Unfortunately, communication skills are rarely taught in the career of medical students. Incidentally, when the doctors are attacked, public support and empathy is lacking these days. Frankly, public expectations of healthcare systems have risen sharply in recent decades, due to impressive advertising campaigns of India’s private hospitals touting their high-tech treatments. To avoid future problems, doctors should try to clearly and accurately convey to the patients and their relatives their thoughts, intentions and objectives before they undertake to treat or operate on patients. Being able to communicate effectively may stop needless ugly violence against the actual saviour...let's save the saviour....Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Real Heroes & Heroines...

I had the honor of singing a patriotic song with the iconic singer Usha Uthup when she performed recently in Hyderabad. Interestingly, when she was in school she was thrown out of music class because she didn't fit in with a voice like hers. I know many famous and successful people who were painfully rejected before making it big. Amitabh Bachchan, the iconic superstar of Bollywood was once rejected by two radio stations for his baritone voice. Shah Rukh Khan during his early days, tried his hand at a restaurant business in Dariya Ganj, but failed miserably. Akshay Kumar, the true “Khiladi” of Bollywood once used to work as a waiter in a restaurant. Rajnikanth, the ‘Thalaiva’ of cinema, once worked as a bus conductor. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the National award winning actor who once worked as a watchman. Boman Irani, got his first ‘major’ break at the age of 44. They struggled to get fame and fought a deadly struggle for their success. I always admire such super successful people who experienced and overcame their failure and I consider them to be the real heroes and heroines. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Talent...

Your talent can't be hidden or suppressed - it's bound to come to the fore some day. Similarly, your goodness will be known to the world sooner or later. Frankly, talent is simply doing the best with what we have. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, most of the talented people are not successful because they lack determination and hard work. Despite that, this world usually never miss to notice their talent at some stage of life. If you are lucky, this talent is acknowledged when you're young in life. Companies of every size love to talk about talent but unfortunately, passionate people asking tough questions are silenced. Rarely we ask ourselves why can't we explore this idea, which could really help us? Talent is a horrible thing to be wasted. It is most frustrating and discouraging to have great ideas ignored, accomplishments unnoticed and genuine creativity bottled up and squashed. Let us notice and encourage talented people around us. Talent can't be suppressed, rather, shouldn't be suppressed. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

The purpose of our life...

Have you ever thought about what is the reason of our existence? Assuming that there is God, and that he created us on this earth with some purpose. Frankly, there isn't a logical reason why he would need to send us here. Life actually began on this planet in a very simple form billion years ago. Through random mutation and natural selection it evolved to present form few thousand years ago.The whole idea of God sending us here on earth with some purpose has many contradictions and paradoxes if we start analyzing deeply. Let me share with you what I sincerely feel which could be the answer for this complex question...He sent us on this earth because He wanted someone that would benefit from the beauty of His creations. Buddha rightly said that we are shaped by our thoughts and we become what we think. Let us have great thoughts and great innovative ideas and let's make this world along with God a better place and a more beautiful place to live in. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Please stand-up ...!!

Jana Gana Mana was formally adopted as India’s national anthem in 1950. It was composed by Rabindranath Tagore on 11 December 1911 and was first sung later in the month on 28th December at the Calcutta session of Congress. Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, which was loosely translated as the leader of people’s minds by Amartya Sen was alleged to have been composed for a durbar in Delhi where George V was proclaimed Emperor of India. This controversy really pained me a lot...but the latest decision of our Supreme court that there is no need to stand when National Anthem plays in theatres to prove patriotism, pained me much more. Everybody knows that Jana Gana Mana is among the most stirring of anthems, I am not a BJP supporter but would definitely say that bringing back the practice of playing the National Anthem in movie theatres was the best thing they did. Let us respect our National anthem by standing up whenever and wherever it is played unless we are handicapped. Milord, let us stand up please and respect our national anthem with utmost dignity and reverence. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Army training...

Army teaches you to be physically and mentally alert at all times. Yes, I have worked in Indian Army for 33 years. Army has taught me to be more disciplined and being able to react quickly. My fitness and discipline are directly proportional to my army training in the Army Medical Corps. One thing, I have definitely learnt in my army training...."Failure is not an option "...we are trained again and again till we get it right. Moreover, we are also taught to be second to none and yes, in war, there are no second prizes, ain't it ? Learning self-discipline in army is to follow the rules without supervision ! I think, discipline is the infrastructure of not only every officer of the Indian Army but of any progressive society....similar to Swachch Bharat. And yes, to be fit and disciplined like an army officer, you may have to work like one, there is no second option. Don't skip your workout, don't cheat on your diet and have adequate sleep...to be fit and disciplined like an Indian Soldier. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Ideas...

Every area of life needs new ideas because they challenge the existing status quo and allows progress to happen. A good idea is mostly simple and bisects at clarity and surprise. Ideas enable us to create art and music and yes, poetry comes from ideas. Ideas give us the power and the means to overcome difficulty. Ideas give us the momentum to make our world a little better. Every issue, stream need an idea when that issue needs development. If something is imperfect, ideas could achieve the perfection. Opinions of different people are always important because they help us shape our ideas. Ideas should be always shared with others. Reading is very important because we learn about others opinion and better ideas are formed. Good businesses start with good business idea. Similarly, successfully movies and popular books usually depend on great ideas. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Education

We study to broaden our horizon towards life. Frankly, we can solve every problem on this earth by using our skills and good intentions through our knowledge. Our education makes us understand and analyse whether we are taking right or wrong decision. When we study, our knowledge improves and it helps creativity and we tend to build something new. Books and studies create curiosity to know more and improve the quality of life.We study to live a better life and also to upgrade our technology. Education is a gift, having the privilege of learning is a gift. We study to understand things around us so that we can apply the knowledge and skills acquired to progress even further.Studying is learning and our learning brings evolution.Studying is education to apply reasoning and knowing the right from the wrong and make this world a better place for everyone to live. Let's make this world a better place by studying. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Teachers

Being well read or well informed need not necessarily put you above those who have been denied access to information ...but it matters. In the presence of Google, predictive search, digital communities, social media, and other technology, information is less scarce than it has ever been. But Google can never replace teachers. Google is only meant for information. A teacher is the one who identify our qualities and helps us to set our goals to achieve success. Teacher is the ocean of knowledge with his great experience. The experience of the teacher is almost impossible to be replaced. Google can never replace the emotional connection a teacher has with his students, it can never replace the sense of responsibility a teacher has with his students, It can never replace the trust which parents have on teachers, it can never replace the sense of belonging a student has with his teachers. Guru Brahma Gurur Vishnu Guru Devo Maheshwaraha Guru Saakshat Para Brahma Tasmai Sree Gurave Namaha...which means Guru is verily the representative of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He creates, sustains knowledge and destroys the weeds of ignorance. I salute such a Guru. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Languages

Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process. I can speak eight languages fluently and have recorded my songs on YouTube in nine different languages. The positive cognitive effects of learning to speak a second language can train the brain to analyze and process different linguistic structures. In fact, you're increasing your ability to replicate the process with multiple languages. A person gets to enjoy social and economic benefits, as well as the mental benefits of learning a new language. You may have better job prospects, brain health, better travel experience and so on. While it can be challenging, learning to speak a second language is good for your brain. In a globalized world, where mobility is facilitated, learning a language is a wonderful benefit. Not only does it help when traveling, it is also a great advantage in almost everything you do and come across. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Libraries...

Do we still need libraries in this digital age...?? Libraries everywhere are under threat. Who needs a library today, when it is possible to find and read almost any and every book or article that has ever been published by using internet. Libraries are a statutory service and it should be available to everyone....but why do we need it when everything is available on net. Yes, library exhibits positive impact on the academic but at a huge cost and maintenance. Libraries do allow people of any income level or background to access high-quality information and to borrow what they want. Whether we like it or not, library culture is almost dying due to easy availability of information on the net. Hence, new innovative services are being developed, taking advantage of IT advances to enhance people’s experiences of using their libraries in the library building through access to e-books and other online collections. Coconut and worshiping

Breaking of the coconut represents the breaking of ego, which is a prerequisite for the attainment of wisdom. Breaking of the ego results in our mind becoming wiser... and the water within the coconut is the nectar of Knowledge. Hindu Pujas are the act of showing reverence to God, a spirit, or another aspect of the divine through invocations, prayers, songs/ bhajans and rituals. An essential part of puja is making a spiritual connection with the divine. Offering flowers is an important part of worship as different Gods & goddesses are known to love certain flowers. ... Some consider offering of flowers to be a prayer that the deity grant us good health, wealth & prosperity. It is natural tendency to keep the atmosphere of the place of worship welcoming with flowers.Hindu worship is primarily an individual act rather than a communal one, as it involves making personal offerings to the deity. Worshipers usually repeat the names of their favorite Gods and Goddesses, and repeat mantras. Happy Ganesh Chaturthi...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Persona

Persona means the way you behave, talk, etc., with other people that causes them to see you as a particular kind of person. Personality is the public personality that people display to those around them and it is influenced by heredity and at the same time by the surrounding conditions. There is subtle difference between the two...persona and personality. The role that one assumes or displays in public or society; one's public image or personality, as distinguished from the inner self. Someone's personality is the specific set of qualities and interests that make him or her unique and unlike others. Your persona is your external layer and your personality is your inner layer. Bear in mind that persona is the Latin for an actor's mask...and your personality is your inner and real self...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Udhta Hyderabad

I live in Secunderabad and naturally, I love twin cities Hyderabad-Secunderabad. I don't want Hyderabad to be ever called Udhta Hyderabad in future...I'm sure, you all know about Udhta Punjab. Drugs have been around in Hyderabad since the IT boom in 2000 but the recent India Today's investigation decodes the drug network in Hyderabad, and also the role of some celebrities. Substances commonly abused by students in college include: Marijuana, prescription medications including stimulants, central nervous system depressants, Ketamine, narcotics, over-the-counter drugs, cocaine, heroin and ecstasy. Vast majority of substance-related problems start on college campuses. Dubbed as the study drug, Adderall and other stimulants are increasing in popularity among college students who are facing pressure to meet their academic requirements and unemployment. College students have greater access to drugs today than they've had in the past. Let us save our Hyderabad from Drug menace and from becoming Udhta Hyderabad. Eye reading...

Let's talk about eye reading. Shakespeare rightly wrote that the eyes are the window to your soul...almost everything can be read by looking at the eyes. Moreover, you can gather a whole lot of intimate details about a person just by looking at them. If you want to show you're interested in what someone has to say, make eye contact often, If you want to Improve your lie-spotting abilities to up to 90% accuracy...look at the eyes...needless to say, if you want to decode hidden emotions...look at the eyes. Frankly, you don't have to say a word, your eyes have already told me everything, because eyes tell everything mouth doesn't. Although, people say that face is the mirror of the mind, I feel, face can hide few things, but the eyes confess the secrets of the heart. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Reading people...

Since my MBBS days, I used to read people. Since then, I knew too very well that body language gives away everything. My love for reading human behaviour and body language was at times affecting my studies. At times, I used to be more interested in body movements and facial expression of the lecturers than the actual lectures in the class. People observation actually helped me to develop my mimicry skills much later in life. Keenly observing people body movements, face expressions, way of speaking and thinking always fascinated me. I always loved reading between the lines and analyzing people behaviour. People constantly unwittingly tell many things about who they are and what they actually think by what they write and what they speak. This can give clue to interesting facts about the person, like what they might want to hide and what they actually express. Looking for patterns and understanding human behaviour is definitely a good way to understand humanity at large. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Personality...

Personality development has always interested me at every stage of my life. I must have read few books on personality development. Only this definition satisfied me... it is nothing but the act of moving from an inert and disinterested state of existence to a zealous, motivated and joyous living one. It’s is the act of celebrating your uniqueness without hesitations and boundaries, but only with more enthusiasm and liveliness. Almost all the books I read dealt with confidence, career, motivation, communication skills, strength and weaknesses, self understanding, leadership, optimism, passion and attitude and assertiveness. Frankly, I give maximum importance to attitude and assertiveness in personality development. These books usually forget mentioning about smart time management, fitness, empathy, creativity and stress management. I strongly believe that reading books may not help much in developing a good personality ...it should come from within and naturally...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

What do you want to do...??

What do you want to do after retirement ? Do you enjoy singing, if so then I would encourage you to sing and record as many songs as possible after retirement. If you love movies like I do, consider buying a house or apartment next to a club or a multiplex nearby where you can grow old watching your favourite movies.Take the time to show your friends and relatives you love that you care about them... spend some time with them and make up for the lost time when you were busy at work and didn't have enough time for them. This is the moment to try things you always wanted to do. If you’ve always enjoyed the company of students, you might really love being a teacher after retirement like I do being a teacher of post graduate students in Anaesthesiology. If painting, drawing and crafts are your thing, you would be surprised to know that your city is full of academies and workshops that offer classes. Finding an animal companion is definitely less complicated than dating humans, try it, adopt a dog. Challenge your brain, learn something new that’s seriously hard...guitar or playing a keyboard. And lastly, learn a foreign language which can delay the onset of dementia. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Need of the hour...

Passion for the job, enthusiasm and sense of purpose is the need of the hour. Patience and perseverance even when the results are not visible should be the attitude. Perseverance is not giving up. It is persistence and tenacity, the effort required to do something and keep doing it till the end, even if it's hard. Perseverance is an attitude of pursuing one idea, discipline, ideal. Talent is helpful but perseverance definitely achieves success. You must be wondering, what I am trying to convey. India would be 70 in another one week. Let us make it more powerful and successful by our passion for the job we're doing right now with our enthusiasm and sense of purpose and of course, perseverance...Col Pendyala Pradeep.Anaesthesiologist.

Movie therapy...

I am a movie buff in true sense...I love movies, I know a lot about movies, I'm a movie fan, movie enthusiast and a movie expert. In fact, I bought a house next to our club so that I can grow old watching movies, since our club provides three new movies a week. I have been watching movies regularly since my childhood and now I am above sixty. Movies offer us a ticket to escape from life's trials and tribulations. We need some kind of therapy in our lives and movies offer that, and at a much lesser cost compared to any type of therapy. We need role models in our lives for inspiration. Real people do inspire us but movies offer a short cut and a more intimate look at our hero's life. As we walk out of the movie hall, we feel rejuvenated and de-stressed. They have a huge impact on moulding our personality, character and behaviour. We are inspired by stories of survival and perseverance in movies just like a wonderful novel. Gossip

Ladies are best source of gossip...but men are bigger gossips than women, according to new research. Earlier, we used to have langar news ...but now, we have loads of news and gossip from Whatsapp and Facebook. Interestingly, people gossip in order to hurt those whose popularity, talents, or lifestyle they envy. And yes, people who don't feel good about themselves temporarily feel better when they judge others negatively. Gossip builds social bonds because shared dislikes create stronger bonds than shared positives. After saying bad things, persons feel more inclined to share their own secrets. And it's a vicious cycle. When people can't generate interesting discussions based on knowledge or ideas, gossip can rouse people's interest. But gossip definitely brings people together and allows to find a common ground. People gossip for many reasons... it makes them feel powerful and prove to others that they've the inside information which nobody knows. You may call it bad and ugly...but gossip is a standard currency of human connection....Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Desires...

Many people are driven by their desires and many continue to fulfill their endless desires till their last breath....I am no exception. Desires are endless.... It is like the thirst which never gets quenched by drinking salt water, it rather gets increased. Frankly, although we have everything, we still desire for more...that's life. I think, hunger, thirst and desire are basic essentials for living. I think, a certain amount of desire is essential to make our life a bit more interesting...Desire per se is not bad but if it increases in quantity to unmanageable levels, it can destroy us....otherwise, it's most welcome. Let's desire constructively ....let's desire to make our lives and others lives a little better before we take our last breath....Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

PP ...Prosperity & Peace...

If you're given a choice of choosing only one between wealth and peace of mind...I'm sure, many would prefer to have wealth and prosperity. Maya had been always more powerful over moksha...strange, but true...!! We've been led to believe that prosperity brings peace of mind, but it's wrong. Frankly, wealth is just a thing, but peace of mind is a feeling, a state of mind. There is a strong relationship between peace of mind and prosperity...positive thoughts promote peace of mind and that in turn prosperity in life. Interestingly, we happen to be in a cycle where matter, money and measurement count more than the infinite power of peace of mind. I can't deny the fact that rich people try to find peace of mind in wealth...but, it's more important to be happy and have peace of mind than being rich. If you have wealth, it’s not sure you’ll have happiness and peace of mind. But, If you have happiness and peace of mind, would you need wealth ?? Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Success & power

Who doesn't want to be successful and powerful ? But yes, we must enjoy every moment of our life and try to find bliss even in our misery. I would never recommend not to try to become successful or powerful...we must try our best but if we can't, we should not consider ourselves to be a failure in life...because I know too very well, success comes and goes, and so does failure. We are bound to be successful if we keep trying to achieve success. I would never agree if someone says be untouched, be uncompetitive. If you don't have the spirit of winning and be successful in whatever you do, there won't be any charm in living. I would say, be competitive, strive hard to be successful, but if you fail, don't be disheartened and keep trying and trying...success is bound to follow...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Alzheimer's

Govt offers pension scheme to staff and that's good. But, there are people who start surviving exclusively on pension and stop working after retirement. I would say, in that case, pension is bad and harmful. Mental stimulation is a must to avoid dementia and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It is always better to take up a job after retirement to keep yourself mentally active. We need to regularly connect with someone who cares about us after retirement. Many of us become more isolated as we get older and after retirement from service. Connecting with others via social networks such as Facebook, Whatsapp and emails should be encouraged after retirement. We must encourage people at risk to make positive lifestyle changes to prevent dementia and to lead an active life after retirement...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Ghosts

I am sure you must have heard about Ooty Ghost Stories and the famous haunted Fern Hill Hotel in Ooty. Many people believe in the paranormal and many educated people I know, believe in ghosts and spirits. Interestingly, a lot of Americans believe in ghosts and in India many people have experienced the same. Nearly 30 percent of Americans claim to have seen a ghost. Strange, ain't it...?? I think, who believe in UFOs, ghosts, supernatural and paranormal share a common thinking style. This is the reason, people like to watch scary movies. Basically, those who have seen a ghost are most likely to be expecting them. And yes, ghosts are almost always seen under arguable circumstances...such as in poor lighting or when our senses are not at their peak function viz. just before sleep...hope, I'm not going to disturb your sleep tonight...Goodnight...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Self esteem

High self esteem is a good opinion of oneself and low self esteem is a bad opinion of oneself. I think, both are equally harmful...I would say, self awareness by seeing ourselves clearly and know exactly how other people see us is more important than self esteem which tends to be mostly high self esteem. Low self esteem is very very harmful...it can lead people to become depressed and fall short of their actual potential. We must have respect for ourselves and our abilities. The only way to improve our self esteem is by our constant endeavor to improve ourselves and our skills. Self awareness helps us to live smartly and have better relationships and have successful career. Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Face the facebook

Sometime in July 2010 I received a hello in my inbox of Facebook but I was unable to reply...I was a computer illiterate then. I was introduced to Facebook by a well wisher Surgeon after my mother's demise on 4 Feb 2010 to tide over my difficult period. I was very keen to reply to the hello and that's how I learnt typing. I have come a long way in computers in these seven years...thanks to Facebook. Today, I edit all my videos myself and make my own power point presentations and write regularly to the editor of various newspapers regularly and they get published very often...again thanks to Facebook. Frankly, I have used Facebook as an educational tool to improve my writing skills and also to share my countless singing videos besides making and meeting my best friends on Facebook. I have used Facebook to connect with my family, friends, professional colleagues, which had immense positive results. I am an avid user of Facebook and it has become so much a part of my life. Cortisol...

Will you believe if I said being a doctor, I can treat half of your diseases and ailments in just few days. But I can do that...whether you believe it or not. Let me explain...Cortisol is the main culprit for most of our problems... Diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular problems. And stress produces Cortisol in our body. At a reasonable level, stress is something that challenges us and helps us grow. But excessive stress causes us to be unhappy and unhealthy. You should have fun every minute ...If you like to watch movies, never restrict yourself from watching and do exactly which your heart desires. Regular exercise decreases the production of cortisol, hence exercise regularly. Stop smoking, eat healthier food, avoid alcohol and late nights. Do something each day to be active...walk, run, play tennis or golf, do yoga or meditation. Try to be creative, if you love singing, sing and record a song, if you love writing, write a letter everyday and share it with your friends. I am sure, now you would agree that I can treat half of your diseases and ailments in just few days...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Missing Clinical Acumen...!!

Sir, pulse mein maza nahee aa raha...which means I am not liking the pulse. If Warrant Officer Chanda our senior most Operation Room Assistant had said this...it used to be most ominous for the prognosis of the patient those days. I am talking about 1989 when we had only monitor in the operation theatre available...Hand On Pulse. We never had those days pulse oximeter, NIBP, Capnography, Cardiac monitors and other multiple monitors. We used to rely on our clinical acumen and constant manual measurement of blood pressure and pulse. Interestingly, we had less number of anaesthetic mishaps those days. These days, more importance is being given on various investigations before a correct diagnosis or a provisional diagnosis. Today, we need MRI report, CT Scan report, Echocardiography report and countless other investigation reports before we diagnose a patient...our clinical acumen has taken a backseat. Those days, none of these investigations were available, we depended wholly on our clinical examination and few relevant investigation but with better outcome...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Sexy @ Sixty...!!

On 6th July 2017, I celebrated my 61st birthday...many people asked me how did I manage to look young...my answer is... I always followed my heart and my passions...दिल जो भी कहेगा मानेंगे
दुनिया में हमारा दिल ही तो है...I always listened to my heart even if my mind disagreed...I always followed healthy habits...never boozed...never smoked...and always tried to get some exercise in the Gym without fail for the last five decades. I must thank my parents for the genes, despite few allergies, I was basically normal and healthy. I always followed my passions...Bollywood songs, singing, Tennis, watching movies and of course, playing Volleyball. And yes, I always had plenty of love from the family and the admiration of friends...I must thank Indian army and Army Medical Corps for keeping me fit where I served for 33 years...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Sone ki chidhiya...

His Make in India and Swatchh Bharat is a giant leap for India and we must agree that he makes news everyday. He is the biggest asset of India. His extraordinary stamina is amazing ..he is a dynamic engine of change. He is expected to transform India like a magic, but I wonder, if one man can do it alone. Needless to say, he is India's most popular leader. His oratory skills are amazingly good. He loves taking risk and constantly bring about changes for the betterment of India. But India would never become the India of his dreams...unless we all try to bring about some change in our own way. Sincerity and excellence in everything we do is the need of the hour. Let's outgrow caste politics, let's outgrow Mandir politics, let's outgrow communal politics, let's outgrow Dalit politics...to make India Sone Ki Chidhiya again ...Golden Bird again...wealthiest land in the world again...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

I am a Gurkha Soldier...!!

I was RMO ( regimental medical officer ) of 2/3 Gorkha Rifles between 1983-85 at high altitude of North Sikkim. I was a teetotaler before joining army especially before joining a Gurkha regiment as their medical officer. Gurkha soldiers or Nepalese are born brave, rather, bravest of the brave, most generous people. I was basically from Andhra Pradesh who had never seen a mountain or a high altitude region before the RMO tenure. I picked up Gurkhali language within three months after my intensive coaching by my sahayak chauvvan ( which means his army personal number had last two digits as 54 ...I think, this ( calling by their personal number ) used to be followed with most of the soldiers since most of them looked the same and had either Thapa, Gurung, Tamang or Pun as suffix in their surnames. The first slogan I learnt in our battalion was Kafar bhanda marnu ramro...which means Better to die than be a coward. Every Saturday, we had Madal ( traditional Drum ) Parade where we used to sing and dance playing the madal drums and sing some dohori nepali folk songs. This used to be the scene after few pegs of Raksi ( Rum ) and Maasu ( Mutton ). I became a typical Gurkha Soldier within no time. I used to sing their songs, dance with a Khukri and also translate their Jhaure geet during Dashain Cultural program for the audience from nearby army units. But I picked a wrong habit from them...and started consuming Rum. I continued my drinking habit till I joined the Department of Anaesthesiology in January 1989 at Command Hospital ( Air Force ) Bangalore...I became a teetotaler again for the last 30 years because I felt my patients need better monitoring and better care which alcohol would never permit...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Cosmetic Surgeries...

Of late, I have administered anaesthesia for few cosmetic surgeries. One of them was a young, healthy and good looking girl..she was posted for rhinoplasty... it is plastic surgery performed on the nose to enhance the appearance of the nose. When I examined her more closely...I couldn't find any abnormality in the shape of her nose...except for a minor depressed bridge of her nose...which was rather looking attractive. I tried to persuade her not to have that surgery on that day, but she insisted...I gave her anaesthesia and the surgery was successful. Frankly, I must advise such girls ( and boys ) that no surgery is hundred percent safe and better avoid such cosmetic surgeries on yourself . I do agree, such surgeries can give both women and men more self confidence and improve their self esteem but such surgeries are better avoided please. I know too very well that many people feel the need to change their appearance and improve their confidence. But my humble advice to them...there is no end to such type of surgeries on your body. A skilled plastic surgeon can offer various effective options to improve your looks and boost your confidence but I still feel sincerely that surgery is not a safe option. Changing outer appearance may contribute to boost your self esteem and confidence for a short while...because, self confidence and self esteem are similar to your happiness which actually comes from within...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Planchet

I am telling you this story because as a kid, the game of Planchet left a huge impression on me. My cousin Kusumakka was a stronger believer of Planchet game, which you may call as childish and stupid. I am sure, you must be wondering what is this planchet...let me explain, find a large triangular cardboard, a pen, and a white plain paper of approximately two feet x two feet ( few white papers can be joined together ). The paper should be no smaller than this to allow enough room for the moving pen to write the correct answer. A minimum of three persons are required to start a planchet. Make a hole in the cardboard and pass a fountain /sketch pen through it and each of the three persons should hold one corner of the cardboard and start concentrating on any person of the family who had recently passed away. A picture of the deceased kept before the three persons playing the game of planchet often helps. Now start concentrating on the spirit of the dead person who is well known to the three persons playing the game and all the three must request the spirit to come which can be done silently. After around five to ten minutes, sometimes after fifteen minutes, the pen starts rolling...each person should balance the cardboard to keep it remain horizontal. After a while, the pen stops moving. That is the time when you are required to ask the spirit a common question silently...the pen starts moving again...you may have to request the spirit to write in one particular language...it does...and usually, you get a correct answer which nobody knew. It may sound silly, foolish, stupid and childish... but yes, I have witnessed & experienced this happening many times myself when I was a kid...most of the answers we received through planchet actually happened in our lives...and it was predicted correctly many years in advance by the planchet ....Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist

Doctor's Day...

I am sure, you all must have read about the recent spate of attacks against doctors in India. There is a paradigm shift in the patients, their relatives and friends attitude towards doctors and the media has a skeptical attitude towards medical services. Hundreds of doctors in Maharashtra and other states were on strike recently. Doctors were seeking more security at their workplace due to an increase in violence against doctors recently in India. We must condemn such attacks on doctors and unabated violence against doctors. Patient dissatisfaction, agitated friends and relatives accompanying patients are the usual perpetrators of violence at the emergency, intensive care unit, and post-surgical wards. There is an urgent need to develop a meaningful doctor patient relationship and media should play a more responsible role to mitigate this problem. Public perceptions towards doctors must change and media should not show negative attitude towards doctors. Public must trust their doctors to deliver high quality care. If you don't trust your doctors and resort to frequent violence against doctors, I need not mention who would be the losers...let us trust each other and celebrate the Doctor's Day on 1 July...Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.

Bhuj Earthquake...

I was the officer in charge of Operation theatre ex- 411 Field Ambulance established at Bhachau, 60 Kms from Bhuj. I was sent to the location after I reported to Military Hospital Bhuj which was badly destroyed in the earthquake...the 2001 Gujarat earthquake also known as the Bhuj earthquake which occurred on 26 January ( India's 52nd Republic Day ) at 08:46 AM IST and lasted for over 2 minutes, 7.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at Bhachau exactly at the place where we established our operation theatre under the guidance of Col Goswami Commanding Officer of 411 Field Ambulance. I was sent to the location immediately from Military Hospital, Dhrangadhra, Gujarat where I was posted at that time. I can never forget the night of 26/27 January 2001 at Bhachau Bhuj when we just finished fixing the tent of our operation theatre and retired to our bed at around 2 am when I heard a truck stopping next to our location. I was extremely tired after constant travelling in the day from Dhrangadhra to Bhuj and then from Bhuj to Bhachau and establishing the make shift operation theatre at Bhachau at night. I just wanted to sleep but I could see something burning next to our location near the truck. Initially, I thought, it could be wood-burning fireplace to combat the cold weather at that time...but I could sense something was drastically wrong. I went near the fireplace and was shocked to see countless dead children being offloaded from the truck and were being cremated en masse. I didn't know how I returned to my tent and how I slept like log that night. When I got up next morning I saw an NGO team had established a tent next to our location and were distributing food free of cost. I was amazed to look at the people having breakfast next to the same location where children were cremated the previous night. I worked at the same location for nearly three months till last injured person was treated. The mass casualty were mostly given Injection Ketamine during surgery and few were operated under spinal anaesthesia and General Anaesthesia. Three surgical teams including teams from Air Force, Army and Navy worked under me and left but I continued for the longest period at the same place. I must have given anaesthesia to thousands of patients, interestingly, with no deaths. I named a twins born after my anaesthesia as Bhu Devi and Sree Devi ...which was shown in the centre page of India Today. Times of India scribe was constantly in touch with me. I was the one who briefed then defence minister George Fernandes when he visited our location. I treated successfully a couple who were brought out of the debris of a building after being extracted after four days...they survived since they were constantly talking to each other under the debris. I saw a Telugu movie during my college days... Nalugu Stambalata ...the Hero was my favourite...Naresh...but at our location I was the hero...he requested for a picture along with me at the location...when he visited our location along with a team of NGO....Col Pendyala Pradeep, Anaesthesiologist.
